World's Longest Sea Bridge Unveiled In China

China has opened the world's longest sea bridge to the general public today. The Qingdao Bridge is 26.3 miles or 42.4 kilometer long and connects Eastern coastal city of Qingdao with the suburb of Huangdao in Jiaozhou Bay. By unveiling this bridge, China has broken the previous record of the longest bridge which was held by Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, Louisiana in the USA, by 4 KMs.

This bridge is said to be standing on more than 5,200 pillars. It took four years to build and the project cost over 10 billion yuan (around 1.55 billion dollars).

This bridge is expected to carry more than 30,000 cars a day, and will cut the commuting time between Qingdao and Huangdao by around 30 minutes.

This cable-stayed bridge has been designed by the Shandong Gausu Group. Its life is expected 100 years.

The construction of bridge started in May 2007, and it took four years to complete. It is said to be one of the bridges built with the highest construction standards with most sci-tech innovations in the world's bridge-building history. “The project has applied a number of hi-tech elements to the bridge, with the total input in scientific research at over 100 million yuan, all into developing some techniques the country did not have before," said Li Qiying, a researcher, Transportation Infrastructure Engineering Quality Inspection Station of Shandong Transportation Department.

Is Osama Bin Laden Dead For Real? I Don't Think So

I woke up early in the morning yesterday. Turned on my computer and did some usual stuff. I was just about to turn off the computer when I saw news of Osama Bin Laden's death. I sit on the chair again and read the news. After that at around 9:30 (IST) US President Mr. Obama came live and announced that Osama Bin Laden has been killed in a military operation by US in Pakistan. Great news. And meanwhile I was tweeting the news of Osama's death. Twitter was full of Osama. Osama Bin Laden was a trending topic. People from all over the world were tweeting about the death of Osama. News channels on television were full of same news. And when it all calmed down, all were back in their daily life, including me. But like most others, this news were not going out of my mind. My mind was not accepting that Laden has been killed. I though, no he is not killed.

The Cruel World : Girl Gets Executed For Being Raped : WTF?

When I woke up this morning, I got to read this really strange news on NY Times website. The news were about Hena (or Hina), a 14 year old girl in Bangladesh, who was allegedly raped by a man of her village. The incident happened when Hena went to an outdoor toilet. The man, who is said to be her cousin, ambushed Hena, beat her up and then raped her. The wife of alleged rapist saw them both in this situation, and guess what? She also beat Hena. Strange? Hold on, read further.

The case went to a local mosque's Imam who issued a "Fatwah" against Hena stating that she was guilty of "adultery" and must be punished. Then a village makeshift court sentenced Hena to 100 lashes in a public whipping. Hena collapsed after 70 lashes and was taken to a hospital. She died a week later, because of internal bleeding and a general loss of blood. The doctors recorded her death as a "suicide"! Strange? It really is.

In an interview, the parents of Hena said that they had no choice other than to follow the Imam’s order. They had to watch their daughter being whipped until she fell unconscious to the ground.

After words spread about this incident, a court ordered investigation. An examination revealed severe injuries on the victim's body. Investigation is going on currently against the Imam, the doctor who turned killing into a suicide, and other people, including the alleged rapist. Hena’s family is under police protection fearing the other villagers will take revenge for getting the Imam and others in trouble.

If you are aware of the situation in many Islamic countries, such incidents are normal. Killing in name of Shariah law is usual there. My personal views are not against the Shariah law, but I'm against the methods of implementations of such law sometimes. You punish people in manner other that the other countries (and you are free to do so, I'm not one of those NGOs who are from the countries who kill thousand of people in wars and will tell you not to kill people) but you should atleast investigate the matter properly. Maybe allegations are wrong and one's life can be saved. Isn't that good for the society? I know the greatness of Shariah law which obviously tries to lessen the crime in the society, as other countries' laws do. The method of delivering justice may be different, but the intentions are same.

When we living in other, developed countries, read about such incidents, we are shocked to see the way justice is delivered. We are like WTF? But each country has their own law. And they are free to deliver justice the way they think is proper. And sometimes its not the country's law's judgement, but the judgement of the mob, the public. If I talk about India, there are many cases of mob-justice around us. A young boy is suspected to steal some stuff and the mod nabs him, cuts his hair, blackens his face, and then beats him up to death. Some women are considered to be witch and are dragged nude around the village and are set ablaze. A girl is abused for not completing the demand of dowry and is tortured the way that she has to commit suicide, or is killed by her in law-parents. There are many examples.

Ofcourse we don't know what has exactly happened in Hena's case. But if the news of punishing her because "she was raped", then it's awful. You can't expect a 14 year girl to have enough understanding to know what is wrong and what is right. Let's hope that the justice is delivered in the case.

Later.

Crazy World: Girl Arrested For 'Stealing' Food Thrown Outside By Tesco

A girl was arrested after she found and took home food, thrown out by a Tesco food store worth £200 following a power cut. Tesco, supermarket giant in UK thrown thousands of pounds of spoiled stock and left it out in the street.

Sasha Hall, 21, from Great Baddow found herself potato waffles, pies and ham from outside the Tesco Express in Great Baddow, Essex. But she was shocked to see police at her home to arreste her for suspected 'theft by finding' and took her to the police station in handcuffs.

'There was £3,000 worth of food going to waste on the street,' said Sasha. 'It had been thrown out, so I thought I could put it to better use. 'When the police came round I was so upset. I felt like a terrible criminal.'
She added further : 'I would think the police have better things to be doing with their time than going after people who pick up potato waffles from the street. It's all been blown totally out of proportion. I thought I could help feed me and my family for a week or two.'

'They knocked at the door and said if I didn't open up they would use a battering ram,' she said. 'They handcuffed me and treated me like I was a hardened criminal and when we left they raided my house. I only make £600 a month. I'm on the brink of getting kicked out of my flat because I can't pay my arrears.'

Hall, who works part-time at a supermarket in Chelmsford, is to appear in magistrates court on February 16 charged with 'theft by finding'.

Wow. Isn't this crazy? I mean if you could be charged for the food you found on the street in India, so many people will land in jail! We have so many poor people who spend their lives eating food thrown outside by people and food outlets.
