Indian Origin Associated Press Photographer Missing In Libya

An Associated Press photographer Altaf Qadri covering conflict in Libya has gone missing. Altaf, 35, is an award winning photographer from Shrinagar, India who has been separated from his colleagues near the eastern Libyan city of Ajdabiya, while he was on an assignment, according to the Associated Press.

"We have lost contact with Altaf Qadri, in eastern Libya. We are concerned about his safety and are taking appropriate steps to locate him," the news agency said in a statement. "We are, of course, most focused on making sure that Altaf is safe and secure and that we are reunited with him as quickly as possible." said John Daniszewski, AP's senior managing editor for international news and photos. "If he has been captured or is being detained, we fully expect that he will be protected and kept out of harm's way." He added.

Altaf Qadri won a World Press Photo award this year for the photograph he taken of relatives mourning over the body of a man killed in a shooting by Indian police in Indian-controlled Kashmir. He joined the European Press Photo Agency in 2003 and covered the conflict in Kashmir. In 2008, he began working for The Associated Press in Amritsar.

Update : The missing AP photographer has been located and is safe and unhurt. He went missing for more more than one day. "We're very pleased that he has emerged unharmed while covering the violence in the area. We thank all the people around the world who offered good wishes for his safe return." said John Daniszewski, the agency's senior managing editor for international news and photos.
